The Conversion Game Intelligence Brief · 26 October 2026

AI Overviews now sit on 88% of buying searches. ChatGPT sends a sliver of Google’s traffic, but those visitors buy four times as often. And a PHP flaw found with AI tools means your store host needs to patch now.

Google’s AI Overviews used to skip most shopping searches, but that is not the case anymore. Our two major update are about where the these searches are moving to, and one security fix you shouldn’t leave until Friday. Everything in the brief comes with something you can do this week to catchup to the new search trends,

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • ✓ 88% of commercial keywords now show a Google AI Overview, up from about 46% a year ago (Semrush).
  • ✓ ChatGPT traffic equals 0.62% of Google organic across 100 sites, but converts at 13.8% against 3.02%.
  • ✓ The FTC sued a company over a fake Trustpilot rating and misleading “from” prices.
  • ✓ PHP patches shipped October 21. If your store runs on WordPress, WooCommerce or Magento, ask your host.
  • ✓ Google’s fast-shipping label now needs delivery in 3 days or less in the US and Australia.

01 · The Intelligence Feed · AI Overviews

Google’s AI Answers Moved Into Shopping Searches. Ecommerce Coverage Jumped From 33% to 85% in a Year.

Semrush tracked the same 400 commercial keywords every month from September 2025 to August 2026 and published the results on October 21. AI Overviews went from about 46% of those keywords to 88%, and to 97% when weighted by search volume. Ecommerce keywords went from 32.6% to 85.1%. “Best X for Y” searches now show an AI Overview 96% of the time, and review searches went from 30% to about 90%. One caveat: this is US desktop data on a fixed keyword panel, not every search.

Two more things for your notes. Rankings were volatile on October 20 and 21, but Google hasn’t confirmed an October update, so don’t rebuild pages over it. The September spam update finished on October 8 after almost 14 days.

What to do this week

Search your 10 most important buying keywords: the “best”, “review”, “vs” and “alternatives” ones. Write down which show an AI Overview and whether your store is cited. Where you’re missing, add a clear comparison or a short answer at the top of that page. The full method is in our AI Overviews guide.

02 · The Compliance Brief · Reviews and Security

The FTC Went After Fake Review Ratings and “From $89” Prices. Check Your Product Pages for Both.

On October 22 the FTC sued GovAssist, a travel-document service, and its owner. The complaint says the company advertised an “excellent” Trustpilot rating built on fake positive reviews, and advertised prices “from $89” when the real minimum was $148. Nothing in this case is AI-specific, and that’s the point: review ratings and “from” prices are live enforcement targets, whoever or whatever writes them.

Second item, and this one is urgent. Wiz Research used AI tools to help find two critical flaws in PHP, which runs WordPress, WooCommerce and Magento. Patches shipped on October 21. Wiz rates the worst one 9.2 out of 10 for severity, and nearly every PHP version back to 5.4 is affected. Your host has to apply the update. Don’t assume they already have.

The practical implication

Send two emails this week. One to your host: “Have you applied the October 21 PHP security patches to my server?” One to yourself: list every star rating and every “from” price on your site, and confirm you can back each one up today.

03 · The Opportunity Stack · AI Traffic

ChatGPT Visitors Buy Four Times as Often. There Just Aren’t Many of Them Yet.

Marie Haynes looked at 12 months of Google Analytics data from 100 sites, more than 145 million sessions. ChatGPT sent traffic equal to 0.62% of Google organic. On the 55 sites that track conversions, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% and Google organic at 3.02%. Google still drove 27 times more conversions than every AI assistant put together.

So the money is still in Google, and the AI channel is small but warm. Both platforms are now selling ads into it. OpenAI expanded ChatGPT ads to 26 more countries, 89 in total, on the Free and Go plans; if you advertise there, automatic “creative enhancements” switch on October 30 unless you opt out. Google is testing ads in AI Mode for people who connect their apps, drawing on the same product feed as your Shopping ads. Your feed quality now affects how you show up in AI answers.

What to do this week

Set up a GA4 view for AI referrals (chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com) and check your Merchant Center titles, prices, stock and shipping times. If you deliver in 3 days or less in the US or Australia, make sure your shipping settings say so.
