You work with the person who sets the strategy, without spending on intermediaries and middle men  in between. This guide explains what a fractional SEO strategist does, what it costs, how it compares with the other options, and when it’s the wrong choice for you strategy.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • ✓ A fractional SEO strategist is a senior specialist hired for a set number of days a month, usually month to month.
  • ✓ They set direction and priorities: audits, a ranked action list, content briefs and reporting. Your team or developers carry out much of the work.
  • ✓ The most common SEO retainer in Ahrefs’ survey of 439 providers was $501 to $1,000 a month. Our fractional engagement starts at $800 a month per site.
  • ✓ Fractional work is growing: US job postings for fractional roles in the first seven months of 2026 already beat all of 2025 (Lightcast).
  • ✓ It’s the wrong fit if you need someone writing and building pages every day. Then you need a full team.

What is a fractional SEO strategist?

A fractional SEO strategist is a senior SEO who works for your business part time, on a fixed number of days each month. The word “fractional” comes from fractional executives such as the fractional CMO: you buy a fraction of an experienced person’s time instead of a full salary.

The strategist owns the plan: what to fix first, which pages to build, which keywords and questions to target, and how to measure progress. In 2026 the role also covers GEO (generative engine optimization), which means making sure AI answers in Google, ChatGPT and Gemini can find and cite your business.

A strategist and an SEO specialist do different jobs. The strategist decides what matters and why. Specialists, writers and developers do much of the hands-on work. A fractional strategist gives you the first role without paying for a full-time version of it.

What a fractional SEO strategist does each month

Scope varies between providers, but a good monthly engagement produces things you can act on. Here is what ours includes, as an example:

  • A performance review of your live Search Console and Google Analytics 4 data: what changed, why, and what it means for the next 30 days.
  • An AI Overview citation check: where you and your competitors appear in AI answers, tracked monthly.
  • A ranked 30/90-day action list your developer or content team can work from directly.
  • Content briefs for priority pages: the target query, current ranking, gaps and the changes needed, written for a writer.
  • Direct access to the strategist by email, with no account manager in between.

On our model that’s 2 to 3 fixed days a month, month to month, and every strategy document stays yours. See the full scope of the fractional engagement.

Fractional SEO strategist vs agency, freelancer or in-house hire

How the four options usually compare. Typical patterns, not fixed rules.
OptionWho does the workCommitmentBest for
Fractional SEO strategistOne senior strategist, a few days a monthUsually month to monthBusinesses that need senior direction, not a full-time SEO
SEO agencyA team, often with an account managerA monthly retainer, sometimes with a minimum termBusinesses that want strategy and execution in one contract
FreelancerOne specialist, often task-focusedPer project or hourlyDefined jobs: a technical fix, a batch of content
In-house SEOA full-time employeeSalary, benefits and managementLarger sites with daily SEO work

The difference that matters most is who you deal with. With an agency, the person who pitched you may not be the person working on your account each week. With a fractional strategist, it’s the same person from the first call.

How much does a fractional SEO strategist cost?

There’s no industry price list, but there is useful data. In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, charged by 20.4% of respondents, and 68.8% charged $2,000 a month or less. Consultants averaged $171.18 an hour, against $98.90 for agencies and $71.59 for freelancers. The survey was last updated in August 2024, so check any quote you get against current offers.

Our fractional SEO and GEO engagement starts at $800 a month per site, with portfolio pricing for agencies and multi-site owners. A full-time in-house SEO costs a salary plus benefits, tools and management time before any work is done.

EXPERT NOTE

“Price the senior hours you actually get, not the monthly fee. Two or three days of focused strategy a month, spent on the few changes that move revenue, can do more than a bigger retainer spread across tasks nobody asked for.”

When a fractional SEO strategist makes sense

  • You know search matters, but there isn’t enough work for a full-time SEO lead.
  • You’ve worked with an agency before and got junior staff, vague reports or a contract that was hard to leave.
  • You’re planning a website migration, or recovering from one, and need someone senior to own the plan.
  • You want to show up in AI answers as well as Google, and need someone who tracks both.
  • You run several sites, or you’re an agency adding SEO and GEO without hiring.

When it’s the wrong choice

Be honest about this before you buy. A fractional strategist gives direction and briefs. If nobody on your side can make the changes, the plan sits in a folder. If you need dozens of pages written and built every month, you need writers and developers too, or an agency that supplies them. And if search is your main growth channel and the work fills every day, a full-time hire will pay for itself.

What the first 90 days should look like

Ask any strategist you’re considering to describe their first three months. A sensible plan looks something like this:

  • Month 1: baseline and quick fixes. A technical and content audit, your current rankings and AI answer citations written down, and the handful of fixes that remove obvious problems such as blocked crawlers, broken redirects or missing pages in the index.
  • Month 2: the pages that earn money. Briefs and changes for the product, category or service pages closest to a sale, with direct answers near the top and structured data that matches the page.
  • Month 3: authority and measurement. A plan for mentions and links from sites your customers trust, and a monthly report that shows Search Console and AI answer results side by side.

If the answer is vague, or month one is mostly meetings, keep looking.

Why more businesses are hiring fractional

Lightcast found at least 34,000 US workers had a job title mentioning “fractional” in 2025, up 265% from 2019. US job postings for fractional roles in the first seven months of 2026 came to nearly 1,000, more than in all of 2025. Marketing and PR made up 10% of those postings, behind finance (46%) and business management (12%).

The appeal is simple for a small business: senior experience is expensive to hire full time, and most businesses don’t need it five days a week.

Questions to ask before you hire one

  1. Who exactly will work on my account, and for how many days a month?
  2. What will I have in hand at the end of month one?
  3. How do you measure progress, in Search Console and in AI answers?
  4. Which tactics do you avoid? Anything built to manipulate AI answers puts you at risk under Google’s spam policies.
  5. What’s the notice period, and do I keep every document if we stop?
