Google’s Spam Update Landed. Gemini Is Faster. And a Cloudflare Setting Is Crushing Rankings Right Now.

Cloudflare Settings Are Silently Blocking Googlebot. Check Yours Now.
A wave of CDN misconfigurations is sweeping through Cloudflare-hosted sites — and it’s catching Googlebot in the crossfire. Site owners trying to block aggressive AI scrapers are turning on blanket “crawl control” settings without realising they are also locking out legitimate search engines. The result: sudden drops in rankings, lost indexation, and broken Google Ads campaigns.
Google’s John Mueller confirmed that Google does not use llms.txt or llms-author.txt files — addressing speculation that Cloudflare’s new bot-management defaults were tied to a separate AI-crawler protocol. The real danger is simpler: user-configured blanket blocks that catch Googlebot in the same net as AI training scrapers.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR BUSINESS
If you run Cloudflare or any CDN, check your firewall rules and bot management settings now. A rule meant to block AI scrapers may be silently blocking Googlebot. Use the crawl view in Cloudflare’s firewall analytics to check whether search crawlers are being challenged or blocked. This is a 15-minute fix that could save months of recovery time.

02 · THE COMPLIANCE BRIEF · AI SEARCH ENFORCEMENT
Google’s August Spam Update Is Complete. AI Overview Manipulation Is Now Enforceable.
Google completed its August 2026 spam update on August 21 after a 2-day, 16-hour global rollout. Like the March and June updates before it, Google called it a “normal spam update.” What makes this one different is what Google did three months earlier: on May 15, it formally added “attempting to manipulate generative AI responses in Google Search” to its official spam definition. The August update was the first major enforcement cycle since that rewrite.
Google explicitly confirmed this update does not target link spam or site reputation abuse — which narrows the field of what it could be hitting. If you are still running GEO tactics that lean on bought mentions, engineered citations, or expired-domain redirects, your exposure is real and the enforcement cadence is accelerating.
THE PRACTICAL IMPLICATION
The GSC Generative AI report is now widely available. Check your AI Overview impression baseline this week — not next month. The next enforcement cycle could come any time, and you need a documented starting point before it does.

Gemini 3.7 Flash Just Upgraded AI Mode. GSC AI Reports Are Now Widely Available.
Google is now running AI Mode on Gemini 3.7 Flash — a model upgrade that means faster responses, improved reasoning, and a wider retrieval net for everyday queries. AI Mode is where Google’s search future lives: AI-generated answers that cite multiple sources before the user sees a single blue link.
At the same time, Google’s Generative AI performance reports inside Search Console — showing AI Overview and AI Mode impressions broken down by page, country, device, and date — are now rolling out widely after months of limited testing. If you don’t see the report yet, check your left-hand menu under Search results. This is the first time publishers can measure their AI visibility inside Google’s own tooling.
